If the tooth has erupted through tissue, it sometimes causes inflammation and/or infection, including red, swollen gum tissue. The result is discomfort and pain caused by crowding other teeth out of position.

Extraction then becomes the most viable option as a remedy. The potential risks of wisdom tooth extraction should be discussed with your dentist. If a wisdom tooth does need to come out, it is always better to do it at a younger age, as the extraction procedure and the healing become more difficult as the person gets older.

Risks for Pain and complications after a wisdom tooth extraction

As with every kind of surgery, however, removing wisdom teeth carries some risks, and problems can occur. However, these risks are relatively small. Some of the complications include:

Pain

Pain is inevitable after removal of wisdom teeth, but prescription pain medication is usually an effective way to alleviate after-surgery discomfort. Ideally, take your first painkiller within the first six hours before the anesthetic wears off. If the pain does not go away after several hours and many pain pills, contact your dentist.

• Dry Socket

Dry socket usually develops between two and five days after the extraction, occurring when a blood clot fails to develop in the tooth socket. It is accompanied by constant throbbing pain. This is easily treated with a packing medication or stimulation of a new blood clot.

Bleeding

Bleeding typically occurs up to 48 hours after surgery. To control it, place gauze over the affected area and bite firmly into the gauze. Do not clench your teeth, but apply pressure on top of the affected area. Replace the gauze as often as needed.

If applying pressure does not alleviate bleeding, place ice packs and gauze on the area and bite for at least an hour. Consult your dentist if you are unable to stop the bleeding.

Complete healing of the gums may take three to four weeks. These are the causes of Pain and complications after a wisdom tooth extraction.
